Mariechen Danz, born 1980 in Dublin, Ireland, lives and works in Berlin.
Mariechen Danz researches representations of the body, investigating the way it has been given meaning in various cultures, epochs, and fields of knowledge. She uses this research to make work which takes multiple artistic forms and is often made in collaboration with other artists and musicians. In her drawings, sculptures, installations, performances, textiles and music projects, the human body emerges as a contradictory structure and a scene of conflict. It is an object and subject of knowledge, power, and control, and an utterly contaminated zone, both politically and historically, within the European project of Modernity.
Danz’ work has been featured in institutions such as Haus der Kunst Munich; 57th La Biennale di Venezia; MAK Wien; Centre Pompidou Paris; Kunsthaus Bregenz; New Museum New York and in solo shows at GAK- Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, Bremen, CAN Centre d’Art Neuchâtel and Kunstverein Göttingen and art in public space projects like Agora, High Line in New York.
She is a recent recipient of the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff scholarship and the Villa Romana Fellowship.
